about

Pianist John Stenger, upright bassist Raymond Clemens and drummer Justin Leigh explored new musical frontiers as Ellipsis, a band that combines their jazz backgrounds with their love of contemporary music. Dissatisfied with just playing old standards, the band explored a new sound that maintains the serious dedication to improvisation of jazz, but combines it with the energy and language of rock music. Their repertoire ranges from Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles to Bright Eyes and Radiohead (all with original arrangements), and also includes their own original compositions as well as new versions of jazz standards like John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps.” This is the same approach that jazz icons like Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk took, but popular music became less favorable as source material when rock and rhythm and blues became the dominant genres. Ellipsis set out to bridge the gap, proving that modern popular music can provide an ample foundation for jazz improvisation – without losing the emotion or intensity of either.
